This Malaysian Standard covers three groups of wrought free-cutting steels for mechanical purposes as listed in Table 3, namely:
a) not intended for heat treatment;
b) suitable for case-hardening; and
c) suitable for direct hardening.

NOTE. Related standards are given in Annex C.

In special cases, variations in these technical delivery requirements or additions to them may form the subject of an agreement at the time of enquiry and order (see Annex B).

In addition to this standard, the general technical delivery requirements of MS 1846 are applicable.
