NOTE 1. For information on laying clay and calcium silicate payers in the flexible form of construction and the design of such flexible pavements, reference should be made to BS 6677 : Part 2. The following flooring materials are not included: natural stone (granite, slate, marble,etc.) terrazzo tiles and slabs and composition blocks (see BS 5385 : Part 5). Tile fittings for use as skirtings, step treads and channels are given in appendix A. Where the floor tiling installation needs to meet specific functional or environmental requirements, or to assist in counteracting potentially detrimental effects on the installation and/or the structure, reference should be made to *MS 1294:Part 4. The specific conditions dealt with in *MS 1294:Part 4, for example, swimming pools, shower areas etc., are given in appendix B. Recommendations for the design and laying of screeds are given in appendix C. Reference is made to tiles bedded directly to a concrete base, but for the design and construction of concrete bases reference should be made to BS 8204: Part 1.

This Part of MS 1294 augments the recommendations given in MS 1294: Parts 1, 2 and 3 and unless the specificcondition requires different materials, design or methods of fixing the recommendations given in the appropriate Part of MS 1294 should be followed.

NOTE 1. MS 1294 : Parts 1, 2 and 3 give recommendations for: exchanging information, time schedules, suitable materials, tile backgrounds and bases and their preparation, cement : sand rendering, movement joints, bedding methods for tiles and mosaics, grouting, protection, cleaning and maintenance.
