ECO-LABELLING CRITERIA FOR ENVIRONMENTALLY DEGRADABLE PLASTICS PACKAGING MATERIAL
This Malaysian Standard establishes environmental requirements for environmentally degradable plastics packaging material. The degradation test is intended to provide an indication of the potential of plastics to persist in the environment. The criteria can be applied to all plastics sheets and films irrespective of colours and in the form of bags or packaging materials. In order to ensure residuals left at the end of the degradation will not cause harm to the environment, the plastics materials will also be evaluated for toxic metals.
The degradation mechanism relevant to the decomposition of the plastics material can be classified as:
a) photodegradation;
b) oxo-degradation;
c) biodegradation; and
d) composting.
