METHODS OF TEST FOR PAINTS AND VARNISHES PART C7 : DETERMINATION OF DRYING TIME USING BK DRYING RECORDER (SURFACE DRY, TOUCH DRY AND HARD DRY)
1.1 This part of the Malaysian Standard specifies a method for determining the drying
time (surface dry, touch dry and hard dry) of paints and varnishes using BK drying recorder.
1.2 This drying time recorder is designed for the provision of reliable data on the
transitional stages of drying or curing of paints and varnished coatings without the need to
monitor the process continuously. For conventional paint films these stages are described
consecutively as follows:
1.2.1 The surface dry stage;
1.2.2 The touch dry or tack free stage; and
1.2.3 The hard dry stage when the film is just robust enough to withstand the scoring of a
ball pointed needle. Reference should be made to MS 133: Part C3 which details method of
recording hard drying times
