Guide for developing conceptual site models for contaminated sites
The objective of a conceptual site model (CSM) is to detail the nature and extent of contamination, the potential migration pathways and to identify potential receptors to the extent possible based on information gathered from the desk study and site visit. A CSM is a system diagram identifying contaminant sources, routes of exposure (pathways), and what receptors are affected by contaminants moving along those pathways. Exposure pathways and receptors should be identified for both current and future uses of the site (where appropriate). The model will be based on a review of all available data gathered during the various investigation phases, and should be used to design the detailed site investigation taking into account identified data gaps and uncertainties. The values stated in International System of Units (SI) are to be regarded as the standard. The values given in parentheses are for information only. This guide is intended to apply to any contaminated site.
